Discovering a Kid-Friendly Path to Math that’s Fun, Easy, and Effective

Eight Great Ways to Learn Math the Pattern Play, right brain Way

I have discovered a fantastic, kid-friendly way to teach the times tables that has generated excitement among teachers, students, and over a million viewers on YouTube. I’d like to share with you how I came upon this amazing path to fun, easy math.

Have you ever heard of the Calvin and Hobbs cartoons? Calvin, a little kid with a BIG imagination, has a stuffed tiger named Hobbs, who comes alive and talks with him. I’d like to share with you Calvin’s take on math: he says to Hobbs, “I’ve been thinking and I think mathematics is not a science, it is a religion.” Hobbs says, “A religion, you say?” “Yes, it is full of miracles. You take two numbers and add them and magically get an entirely different number. You have to believe it or not. Why, this math book is full of things that have to be accepted on faith. I tell you, it is a religion.” Hobbs exclaims, “And in the public schools too, no less. Call a lawyer!” Calvin reasons, “As a math atheist, I should be excused from this.

Calvin, and a large majority of kids, are creative, imaginative right-brain thinkers, who learn by seeing the big picture. However, most children are taught math in a rote, left-brain way and feel bad about math and themselves for not understanding it, and, like Calvin, they become math atheists.

Five years ago I was working at a Charter school and I was asked to prepare kids for standardized tests in math. It went well until one day I was working with Betty, a 5th grade student who refused to even look at a math problem. She said, ‘Nooo, I don’t want to. It’s too hard.” Dejected, she put her head on the desk, saying, “I can’t do math.”

Like Calvin, Betty was a math atheist, with a right-brain learning style and the way  math was usually taught just didn’t make sense to her. So, feeling inspired, I had her create the Ones using patterns, and then the Twos using other patterns. We were simply playing with patterns, but after a while I helped her find patterns that revealed the big picture of the entire times table! It all began to make sense to her. Seeing is believing.

The next day I came into the room to work with another student and Betty waved to me enthusiastically and said, “I’m using the paper for all my math problems,” referring to the paper we had scribbled on the day before. She now had an entirely different attitude about math, and about herself.

I worked on the times table that night, expanding this pattern discovery process, and I tried a new version the next day with more students. They had the same positive reaction that Betty had! Kids loved this right-brained approach to math, and teachers and the principal loved it too (as well as parents, particularly home-schooling parents).

I continued to play with and expand this visual right-brain math approach, and posted free videos on YouTube, revealing in playful and animated patterns the bigger picture of math. Everybody encouraged me to share this gift with the world. I named this system Pattern Play Math and I became Mister Numbers.

My intention with this expanding right brain math approach is to help kids feel good about math, and themselves, and help them become math believers. In addition to over a million views on Youtube, I have received hundreds of enthusiastic responses  from students, teachers, and parents  who have been thrilled to find a kid-friendly, fun, easy, and effective path to math.

Mom uses phone as prop to teach times tables, “WOW!”

“I came across your youtube videos. While I was intrigued by all of them, the tic tac toe for 3′s and 7′s is what really got my attention. So, this morning I took a piece of paper and our telephone and showed her (my 3rd grader) your easy method during breakfast. Now as a parent, you know that there’s not much time on a school morning for breakfast, let alone 2 multiplication lessons. That’s how easy you made learning these times tables. Before breakfast was finished, my daughter was able to draw the tic tac toe tables herself and was excited about it! On the short 8 min ride to school I gave her my cell phone and after reviewing the 3′s and 7′s I showed her the 9′s and Wow! She did it just like that! I’m amazed that she learned this just from one of your videos. Thank you for seeing that children are wonderful learners who learn better outside the box. I am definitely going to be using more of your techniques in helping my daughter (and me too); can’t wait to help her create her own (EZ Times Table) chart.”

A dial pad on any phone is a great aid in learning the times tables for the Ones, Threes, Sevens, & Nines.


Can you picture the numbers on a phone dial pad?

If so, it can help you learn your times tables! The numbers you see are the ones-digits (Onesies) for the Ones, Threes, Sevens, and Nines times tables. See a dial pad in your mind and you are on your way.

A dial pad of any phone can be an aid to learning the times tables, and a close up. This will show the ones digits (Onesies) of the Ones Times Table, the Threes times table, the Sevens times table, and the Nines Times Table. It makes it easy to figure out the rest and memorize the times tables.

ONES ON any PHONE DIAL PAD:
These are the Ones-Digits or “Onesies” when counting by ONES. Easy.

THREES Times Table show up when the phone is turned to the left.

New Animated Right Brain Math Video: Nines on a Number Wheel, less than 3 minutes

Awesome New animated video by MisterNumbers Right Brain Math

The video below shows how the Nines have fun patterns on a Number Wheel. Every time you go around 9 on a Number Wheel, you can get to the same place by going backwards 1 (because there are ten numbers 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-0 on the Wheel,  1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7 and 4 and 6 all create the same patterns starting and ending at zero). The video also includes the Ones because it creates the same decagon. Then it shows a neat way to create the Nines from a simple pattern. It also shows a trick with the Nines (that numbers divisible by 9, add up to 9). It does all this in under 3 minutes.

5 Star feedback for Wheel Math App by Right Brain Math

The price is only $ .99 and overall feedback for Wheel Math App by MisterNumbers is a full five stars! (See comments on iTunes below). 8-10 year olds love it. Also 15 year olds love it. Many Teachers and parents love it. Even a 3 year old says “I want to do the Threes!”  People love the easy touch numbers, the simple display of patterns, the giggle-inducing kids voices, and are amazed at the fascinating patterns it reveals. Makes math fun! App visually shows how the decimal system works in a circular way and makes the times tables easy to learn. A great tool and “wheel” fun. Also check out the useful videos.

This is an app my 11 year old can enjoy. Most of the math apps are easy and bore her quickly. This one makes her think and take her time. Great fun even for adults

I love the playful nature of this app and how it shows these interesting relationships between numbers on a wheel. Makes learning about numbers fun for kids of all ages. My 15 year old son likes it too. For visual learners like myself, this tool will be a big help learning multiplication and just enjoying the beauty of numbers.

This app makes multiplication fun for kids and kids at heart. The patterns quickly emerge, and as an adult, I saw the fascinating patterns that the different numbers take on the wheel. I also was interested in creating, and then viewing with my own eyes, the interconnected relationships between multiplication, addition, and subtraction. It’s a whole new way to think about math- easier and prettier than the way I learned in school. Also my three-year-old likes the sounds, and can do the number wheel himself since the application is easy to follow; he says “ I want to do the threes!” Although clearly he cannot enjoy it on as many levels as I can, we both definitely like it.
